Accidental Soldier

Accidental Soldier

$26.99

Accidental Soldier depicts Richard B. Schwartz's military experiences, first as an ROTC cadet at the University of Notre Dame and finally as an Army veteran teaching in Madison, Wisconsin. In 1959, Vietnam was little more than a word on a map; within ten years, Americans saw the Tet Offensive and their campuses in flames. Schwartz was at the ground zeroes of that time, teaching at the United States Military Academy from 1967-69 and then going to the University of Wisconsin, Madison, just after the Dow riots and before the bombing of Sterling Hall. The central portion of the book focuses upon Schwartz's experience at West Point, its cadets, officer corps and system of education. A sequel to his award-winning memoir, The Biggest City in America,Accidental Soldier reflects upon his military and academic experience through the perspective of an over forty-year teaching career, twenty-nine of which were spent as a dean at Wisconsin, Georgetown and the University of Missouri, Columbia.

How I Spent My Summer Vacation

How I Spent My Summer Vacation

$12.78

Pulling together the pusillanimous power of the Ramones, the anthemic shoutalong choruses of Sham 69, the riff sensibilities of Social Distortion, while not sounding a speck like any of these bands, Bouncing Souls deliver up high-octane melodic punk as its meant to be played. Fast, hard, and with more concern for passion than proficiency, the quartet remains a welcome reminder of punk's true soul. Beyond the politics and societal polemics, punk was about kids picking up instruments and slamming out songs for other kids. Talent was a plus, but not a prerequisite, having a point to make about something, anything, even if it wasn't blindingly brilliant, was. Bouncing Souls know this implicitly, and always have, which is why their focus is on energy and attitude. Sure, the odd bum chord or off-tempo beat may slide in to How I Spent My Summer Vacation, but unlike the slick purveyors of punk-by-numbers for the MTV masses, the quartet doesn't go back for the second or third take, not if the feeling is already in place. So, there are no grand philosophies or political stances here, the band preferring to speak directly to young people's lives. So, if you find the infectious "That Song" trite, with its heartfelt lyrics about music shaping one's life, or "Streetlight Serenade," a tribute to the singer's BMX bike, silly, well it just goes to show your teenaged years are far behind you. The Souls are no longer teenagers, either, but they've retained their exuberance, and their memories are strong enough to perfectly recall the concerns and joys of youth. Especially the job, a feeling that sets every track afire. Friendship, relationships, finding oneself, and growing up are the prevalent themes, and the great insight is the lack of insight. There are no answers to be found, just a reflection of ordinary life's adventures, and if the band has a philosophy, it's to enjoy it to the hilt. And that's precisely how summer vacations should be spent. ~ Jo-Ann Greene, Rovi

Dream Soldier

Dream Soldier

$14.39

Despite a string of inspirational, transatlantic '90s hit singles and a deep sensual voice which stood up to comparisons with the likes of Anita Baker and Roberta Flack, South London vocalist Des'ree had become more renowned for her much-maligned "ghost, most, toast" rhymes of "Life" than her melodic soul-pop sound by the time of her fourth album, Dream Soldier. Five years on from 1998's Supernatural, the Brit Award-winner certainly hadn't let the constant flack deter her from pursuing her rather innocent, nursery rhyme-esque lyrical stance. Lead single "It's OK," a chilled-out slice of acoustic, coffee house soul (featured here in its original campfire singalong version and more polished Stargate radio edit) features such immortal words as "a cup of tea might just do the trick/the milk's gone off/by now you're feeling sick," while the flamenco-led Liberty X-esque R&B of "Doesn't Matter" contains such pearls of wisdom as "before you think of hanging up your boots/just sip on some juice." While there's a certain naive charm to the over-riding sense of a schoolgirl's first poetry journal, it's a shame that the over-simplistic lyrics often detract from her lush and textured vocal tones and uplifting soulful sound. If she could avoid making listeners cringe every few couplets, then she'd have herself a winner, as Dream Soldier effortlessly serves up the kind of sweet, sophisticated, and tranquil Gabrielle-esque urban pop that's tailor-made to wash the worries of the world away. "Human" is a spiritual ode to the trials and tribulations of life set against a backdrop of some rather squelchy funk chords and a breezy string section which appears to have borrowed Pachelbel's Canon in D; "Cool Morning" is the kind of gorgeous orchestral ballad she famously pulled off so well on the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack; while there are also convincing attempts at breezy country-pop ("Why?"), Motown ("Fate"), and guitar-driven MOR ("Nothing to Lose"). Kevin Bacon (the former Comsat Angels' bassist, not the Hollywood actor) and Jonathan Quarmby's polished but rather one-note production means that some songs struggle to make themselves stand out from the crowd. Although Dream Soldier may descend into pleasant background music territory, it's still a welcome if sometimes slightly awkward return from the artist with the sunniest disposition in pop. ~ Jon O'Brien, Rovi Performers: Ali Friend - Double Bass; Brendan Power - Harmonica; Chris Ballin - Vocals (Background); Derek Green - Vocals (Background); Des'ree - Vocals (Background);

Soldier Blue

A cavalry unit in Colorado is conducting two important cargoes to Fort Reunion, home of the 11th Colorado Volunteers: Cresta Marybelle Lee (Candice Bergen), the fiancee of an officer in the unit until two years ago, when she was taken by the Cheyenne, and who just escaped; and Captain Battles (Dana Elcar), the paymaster, with a strongbox containing gold. The men are tired -- almost asleep in their saddles -- and frustrated, and doubly so by the presence of Cresta, whose beauty and reputation (by virtue of living two years with "savages") is driving them to distraction; all except for Honus Gant (Peter Strauss), a neophyte trooper and wide-eyed innocent. The detachment is ambushed by a Cheyenne war party and the only survivors are Cresta and Honus, who learn to tolerate each other as they struggle across the wilderness and the desert in search of help. An encounter with white trader Isaac Q. Cumber (Donald Pleasence), a profiteer who is running guns to the Indians, nearly results in their deaths, and Honus is seriously wounded. Cresta goes off in search of help and is picked up by a cavalry scout and brought to the 11th Colorado, whose commanding officer, Col. Iverson (John Anderson), is planning a punitive strike against a peaceful Cheyenne encampment over the massacre of the paymaster's party. Cresta tries to secure help for Honus but Iverson is too busy planning bloodshed, and her fiance, Lt. McNair (Bob Carraway), is just too eager to pick up where he left off with her to listen to her warnings. She rides out on her own and returns to the village where she'd spent the previous two years, while Honus manages to survive to reach Iverson. He ends up along for the assault on the village, which takes place despite the chieftain Spotted Wolf (Jorge Rivera) flying a flag of truce and an American flag given him at a previous negotiation with the whites. The Native Americans defend themselves when fired upon with artillery and rifles, and all hell breaks lose -- virtually all of the men in the village are killed in the first assault, and then the soldiers spot the women, children, and old men, and there begins an orgy of rape, mutilation, beheadings, dismemberment, and torture before Honus' horrified eyes by joyously shrieking soldiers. Cresta kills a soldier who tries to rape her and intends to die with her Native American family but is pulled out, only to watch the slaughter continue. In the end, Honus is left to be marched back to Fort Reunion as a prisoner for trying to stop the killing, and Iverson expresses pride and satisfaction at what he's done, while Cresta and a tiny handful of survivors -- almost all old men and women -- watch in mute horror and anger. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi

A Spent Bullet: Louisiana 1941

A Spent Bullet: Louisiana 1941

$19.95

">Late summer 1941. Louisiana's piney woods are engulfed by a tidal wave of soldiers engaged in the largest army maneuvers ever undertaken on American soil. For many of these young men, as well as the isolated Southern communities, life will never be the same. Although no one knows it, our nation will be at war in three months. >Elizabeth Reed is a young Louisiana schoolteacher who dislikes soldiers. Harry Miller is a Wisconsin soldier who hates Louisiana. It only makes sense that they should meet and fall in love. >Their story begins with a bullet-an empty cartridge tossed from a truckload of soldiers. The note inside it will change the destinies of these two young people. >In the midst of large-scale battles between the red and blue armies, Harry and Elizabeth are each fighting their own war with dark secrets from their pasts. They have nothing in common except mutual desires to escape these pasts. In spite of clashing at every turn, they run right into each other's arms as they jointly learn that the hardest person to forgive is yourself. >Within this clash of cultures lies the core message of A Spent Bullet. Rural Louisiana is never the same, and neither are the soldiers who learn about Louisiana mud, mosquitoes, and misery mixed with memorable Southern hospitality. More than a love story, A Spent Bullet recreates a memorable but largely forgotten time in Louisiana and our nation's history. Told in the warm and touching style loved by readers of his previous eight books, Curt Iles weaves a story of love, history, and redemption.>"
