War Poem: III. The Dead?? Urgenntt.?
The Dead by Rupert Brooke
Blow out, you bugles, over the rich Dead!
There's none of these so lonely and poor of old,
But, dying, has made us rarer gifts than gold.
These laid the world away; poured out the red
Sweet wine of youth; gave up the years to be
Of work and joy, and that unhoped serene,
That men call age; and those who would have been,
Their sons, they gave, their immortality.
Blow, bugles, blow! They brought us, for our dearth,
Holiness, lacked so long, and Love, and Pain.
Honour has come back, as a king, to earth,
And paid his subjects with a royal wage;
And Nobleness walks in our ways again;
And we have come into our heritage.
i need to write an essay on this poem, but i am in need of some help right now.
How would you say Rupert Brooke in this poem, present the aspects of war?
These aspects of war would be the glory and honour for dying for a country, etcetc.
but HOW is it presented?
through what?
Even though we're dead, we leave behind a brilliant significance.
there are heroes in this world, who are well respected as he states when he says, 'Their sons, they gave, their immortality'
But it is all one big circle, we see when he opens with 'Blow, Bugles, Blow.'
i think that the whole message of this poem is that there are heroes in this world who are rarer than gold, and ones who are rarer than trash, but even the great ones will be forgotten one day...even after there amazing loyalness.

Rare Bird Alert $11.98 From the earliest days of his comedy career, Steve Martin has incorporated the banjo into various aspects of his act, and fellow banjo players have spoken with reverence of his skills for decades. But in recent years he has put a renewed focus on the instrument, and he won a Grammy for his album The Crow in 2010. Rare Bird Alert came along a year later, and it's a full-fledged country/bluegrass album consisting entirely of Martin originals and recorded in collaboration with the Steep Canyon Rangers. Some of the songs are comedic: the hilarious faux-gospel harmony number "Atheists Don't Have No Songs" is an album highlight despite its lack of an interesting melody, and "Women Like to Slow Dance" is both a wry reflection on gender differences and a straight-up bluegrass barnburner. "Jubilation Day" is one of the funnier kiss-off songs ever recorded ("Let's always remember the good times/Like when you were out of town"), and there's even a surprisingly straight version of Martin's breakout novelty hit from the 1970s, "King Tut." But other tracks are sweet and tender, such as the wonderful "You" (written for Martin's wife) and the elegantly lovely "The Great Remember." And there are several songs on which elegance, energy, and boundary-pushing creativity coexist joyfully -- notably the gorgeous "More Bad Weather on the Way" (on which Martin plays very expert clawhammer banjo) and the brilliant instrumental "Northern Island," which features a startlingly complex chord progression for a bluegrass number. Alive/Rare Junk $16.78 Two superb albums on one CD equal one must-own CD. The studio sides on Rare Junk include covers of the jazz standard "Willie the Weeper" (with its familiar "Hi de hi dee ho" chorus), "Collegiana" (done jug band style), "Cornbread and 'Lasses," Tim Hardin's "Reason to Believe," and Jackson Browne's "These Days" in one of its better (and surprisingly upbeat) versions. Some of this stuff is so self-conscious in its humor -- "Sadie Green the Vamp of New Orleans" and "Dr. Heckle and Mr. Jibe" come to mind -- that it's hard to believe that it was recorded with much confidence of success, but it works musically, capturing the vaudeville side of the band's orientation better than anything on their first two LPs. Alive, recorded at the L.A. Troubadour circa 1967, is one of the great live albums of its decade, capturing the early group in top form, clowning around in a loosely structured show that has them covering "Buy for Me the Rain" (which was already a hit), as well as B.B. King's "Rock Me Baby," the Reverend Gary Davis' "Candy Man" (in a version superior to the first album's studio cover), and Earl Scruggs' "Foggy Mountain Breakdown." From Small Things: The Best of Dave Edmunds $9.99 It seems like assembling a compilation on a roots rocker like Dave Edmunds would be an easy task. While his backing bands and production styles have changed, his musical aesthetic has remained essentially the same since he bolted from Love Sculpture and started a solo career in 1971 -- no matter what he did, he remained a passionate, devoted fan of old-time rock & roll, rockabilly, country, Chuck Berry, the Everly Brothers, and Phil Spector. At first, he did this literally on his own, laying down every track himself for his first two records, and he did this to acclaim and success, including the surprise Top Ten hit "I Hear You Knockin'." By the mid-'70s, he hooked up with Nick Lowe and the two formed the core of Rockpile, a retro-rock new wave outfit that provided support on Dave and Nick's solo albums and toured as its own entity. During this time, Edmunds was a rare thing -- an interpretive rock & roll singer. He had an exceptional ear for songs, whether it was oldies or newer material by such contemporaries as Lowe, Elvis Costello, and Graham Parker; he made the new songs sound like classics from the days before the Beatles, yet he and Rockpile performed them with an energy and vigor that made them fit the new wave. Rockpile had a nasty split after recording their lone album, and Edmunds went through two enjoyably patchwork albums (Twangin' and D.E. 7th) before hooking up with ELO main man Jeff Lynne for 1983's Information. Like Edmunds, Lynne is also a lover of old rock & roll -- at their core, such early '80s hits as "Rock & Roll Is King" and "Hold On Tight" are Jerry Lee Lewis tunes -- but he had no compunctions about embracing the production of the time, down to the drum machines, phased guitars, and layers of synths. Perhaps since Edmunds was once a studio geek himself, this appealed to him, and he submitted to a makeover that made him sound like ELO and brought him hits, both on MTV and radio, leading to his first American Top 40 hit since "I Hea... |

Memphis Rockabilly King $17.99 There was probably no worse city in America to be a second-string rockabilly artist than Memphis, TN -- with Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Charlie Feathers, Billy Lee Riley and the rest of the Sun Records roster in town, you could have a lot of talent and still look like a piker in comparison. Eddie Bond was one of the dozens of rockabilly singers who bubbled under on the Memphis music scene in the '50s, cutting a few rare singles for Mercury before starting his own label and later enjoying some local success as a country artist, but this CD collection of 40 (!) sides Bond recorded between 1955 and 1984 proves he was more interesting than the majority of lesser-known first-era rockabillies. Bond's early Mercury andEkko sides (such as "Slip Slip Slippin' In," "Boppin' Bonnie" and "Flip Flop Mama") were frantic stuff indeed, dominated by Bond's strong but acrobatic vocals and locomotive guitar work, and if a major hit never came his way, he also never gave up on the music, still cutting solid rockabilly sides like "Juke Joint Johnny" and "Look Like a Monkey" well into the late '60s. While Bond was also recording country songs in the '60s, the tunes presented here are tough honky tonk stuff that show the man still hadn't given up the ghost, and given how much music has been crammed onto this disc, the batting average is admirably high, with nary a dog in sight. Eddie Bond was hardly the Rockabilly King of Memphis, despite what the title of this disc would lead you to believe, but he was one of the better exponents of the form and this collection captures him in solid form; vintage rockabilly obsessives will certainly want to give this a spin. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |
